EcoVillage - The Emerging Community Model for a Sustainable Culture

When you do a search for 'What is an EcoVillage' you will find pretty much a repeat of a definition put forth by Robert Gilman of the Context Institute in 1991 at a Gaia Trust seminar...he defined an ecovillage as a "human-scale full-featured settlement in which human activities are harmlessly integrated into the natural world in a way that is supportive of healthy human development, and can be successfully continued into the indefinite future."

Since that definition was first put forth an enormous amount of financial and human resources have been spent to manifest a functional prototype that could be showcased.

The Lammas EcoVillage was able to succeed in overcoming the single largest obstacle to EcoVillage development in developed countries - they obtained planning permission from the local planning officials.  Not only did they gain planning approval but they did it in Wales, United Kingdom, which has the world's strictest building and land use codes that can only be compared to various states in the United States.

An EcoVillage is above all else 'practical' and when developed from a grounded perspective Lammas proved that a project can be not only approved by building authorities and planning departments, but can actually become a tremendous asset to any larger surrounding community/town/city.
